174-184: Shutdown can race with an invoke or stop that has resolved its runtime but has not yet acquired the lock.In
handle,self._owned(request)runs beforeasync with owned.lock. When the lock is free,asyncio.Lock.acquirereturns without yielding, so no interleaving occurs insidehandle. Theshutting_downre-check after the lock covers that case. Inshutdown, thelocked()check is followed byasync with owned.lockfor each runtime in sequence. Duringawait self._stop(owned)on runtime A, a pending request for runtime B already seesshutting_downand is rejected. I found no concrete race. One gap remains: a start can block on_start_lockinsidehandleat the momentshutdowntakes_start_lock. That start then acquires the lock afterward and re-checksshutting_down, so it is also rejected. The behavior is correct.LGTM!

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winReturn the retained runtime ID with
start_failed.
RuntimeServerretains the non-active runtime, but the failed start response hasresult: null. The socket dispatcher forwards that response unchanged, andtransport.clientreturns it unchanged. Since stop requests requireruntime_id, the client cannot stop the retained runtime. Include its ID in the error response while preserving server ownership for shutdown cleanup.Suggested fix

Addressed the review finding in f8d5631: failed starts now return the retained runtime ID, and the regression test stops that runtime using the returned ID. |

Overview
Stack position: Stack 1 of 8 → Block 1. Removes the one-runtime-per-sandbox restriction from the task runtime server. The server owns runtimes by returned runtime IDs, serializes invoke and stop per runtime, and allows another runtime to start after one stops. Uncertain starts remain guarded because the server cannot safely route an unknown runtime ID.
This is the task-side multi-runtime foundation for the later host/provider blocks.
Where should the reviewer start?
sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime_server/state.py— per-runtime ownership and operation locks.tests/python/runtime_server/test_sdk.py— regression coverage for starting two runtimes, invoking both, stopping one, continuing to use the other, and starting a third.tests/python/runtime_server/test_state.pyandtest_transport.py— independent routing, concurrent invocation, and cleanup.Validation: 126 tests under
tests/python/runtime_serverpassed; Ruff andgit diff --checkpassed.Related Issues
Relates to the runtime server introduced in feat: add Fabric host CLI and OpenShell code review example #387.
