Overview

Stack position: Stack 2 of 8 → Block 2. Adds explicit environment lifecycle operations to the Rust and Python SDKs. A host-side provider can prepare or attach an environment, start a runtime inside it, and release it using typed environment references and handles. This is the SDK contract layer above Block 1.

Where should the reviewer start?

  • crates/fabric-core/src/runtime.rs — environment references and lifecycle operations in the Rust core.
  • sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/client.py and types.py — Python API and typed models.
  • tests/python/test_environment_lifecycle.py — lifecycle coverage.
  • schemas/sdk/environment-reference.schema.json — serialized environment reference contract.

Validation: Rust core tests, cargo check, rustfmt, Ruff, and focused Python tests passed. The full rebased stack's core suite also passes (159 tests).

Related Issues

  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added environment lifecycle operations in the Python and Rust SDKs: prepare or attach to an environment, start runtimes within it, and release it separately.
    • Added typed environment handles and references. Prepared local environments can be reused across runtimes; releasing a caller-owned environment detaches it without deleting its files.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Validated OpenShell workspace and artifact paths, rejecting invalid formats.
    • Added checks to ensure a prepared environment matches the runtime plan.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded SDK and API guidance on environment lifecycles, provider support, and environment-local paths.

Walkthrough

The change adds explicit environment preparation, attachment, runtime startup, and release APIs to the Rust core and Python SDK. It adds typed environment handles and references, provider-specific path handling and validation, schemas, API references, integration guidance, and tests.

Changes

Environment lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider-specific path handling
crates/fabric-core/src/config.rs, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/models.py, tests/python/test_environment_lifecycle.py
Environment planning resolves paths against the host only for the local provider. OpenShell workspace and artifact paths receive provider-specific validation. Tests cover path preservation and invalid values.
Rust environment lifecycle
crates/fabric-core/src/runtime.rs, crates/fabric-core/src/error.rs, crates/fabric-core/src/schema.rs, crates/fabric-core/src/lib.rs
The core adds environment references and explicit prepare, attach, release, and start-in-environment operations. It validates handles, adds lifecycle errors, exposes the APIs, and adds schema generation and core tests.
Python SDK lifecycle
sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/*, crates/fabric-python/src/lib.rs, tests/python/test_environment_lifecycle.py
The SDK adds typed environment references and handles, native lifecycle bindings, and Fabric methods. Tests cover handle validation and reuse of one prepared environment across runtimes.
Schemas and lifecycle references
schemas/*, adapter-contract/typescript/schemas/runtime-context.schema.json, docs/reference/api/*, docs/sdk/python.mdx, skills/nemo-fabric-integrate/*
Schemas describe environment references and clarify that non-local paths are environment-local. API references and integration guidance document lifecycle operations and provider constraints.

Environment lifecycle calls preserve local paths across the Python/native boundary, and unsupported releases report the provider-specific error. No identified behavior change currently blocks merging.

1865-1887: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The comment identifies a real representation detail, but it does not establish a defect. The inspected contract requires an absolute POSIX task path and does not prohibit / or repeated separators. No source or documentation requires a non-root directory. Adding empty-segment checks would impose an unsupported new rule.

🟡 Minor · Reject environment handles with mismatched paths. · runtime.rs:996-1004

crates/fabric-core/src/runtime.rs:996-1004
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject environment handles with mismatched paths.

When start_runtime_in receives a handle prepared for plan A and a local plan B, the handle validation accepts the plans if provider, control location, and ownership match. The local host then uses plan A’s workspace as its current directory, while artifact_manifest(plan B) creates artifacts under plan B’s artifact root. This can run the runtime and write artifacts in different, unintended locations. Compare the effective workspace and artifact paths during handle validation.

crates/fabric-core/src/runtime.rs: 2

919-926: The release-specific error is already in place.

The concern from the earlier review about misleading Process labels is resolved. UnsupportedEnvironmentRelease now carries only the provider name.

884-918: LGTM!

Also applies to: 996-1004, 1195-1208, 1327-1422, 5458-5632

sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/types.py: 2

1708-1718: The Path preservation fix is already applied.

The earlier suggestion has been implemented. A local handle keeps Path values unchanged. A local handle converts other text values through _required_text.

1614-1707: LGTM!

Also applies to: 1719-1738

crates/fabric-core/src/error.rs: 1

272-307: LGTM!

Addressed the review finding in 95abe2a: environment-handle validation now compares the effective workspace and artifact paths, with regression coverage for mismatched paths.

If preparation completes after cancellation and release_environment() fails, we silently discard the cleanup error. With the OpenShell provider, that could leave a sandbox running without exposing its identity for recovery. Can we preserve cancellation while reporting the cleanup failure and environment identity?
