Summary

Adding a second account could stop on "Setting up your account…" for good, in the QA build of #50 even right as the sign-in screen opened. Two causes met:

  • What the first sign-in left behind. A sign-in ends the sign-in screen itself: once the account is stored and active the app leaves it, which cancelled the work holding the OAuth callback before it cleared the callback from OAuthCallbackInbox or the pending authorization from the vault. The next "Add account" found both, finished the old sign-in again and signed in the account already there. The screen now takes the callback before acting on it, and SignInCoordinator.complete claims the pending authorization before it asks the server anything, so the same callback seen again finds nothing to finish.
  • How adding ended. Adding ended only when the active account changed. With every account shown together (Phase 19c: every account together #39), the first account is made active again at once, and an account signed in again was active already, so that change could be missed or never come. AccountRepository.signIns tells each sign-in, and adding ends on it.

Test plan

  • SignInsTest: every sign-in is told, a new account's and one signed in again, whose active account does not change.
  • SignInAcceptanceTest: the same callback seen again after a sign-in finishes nothing, and its code is exchanged once.
  • Locally: the sign-in module's and the acceptance tests, the app's unit tests, detekt and ktlint of the touched modules.
  • The cancellation itself (the screen leaving mid-way) is not reproduced in a test: it needs the composition to go away inside complete. Both clean-ups now come before anything that can be cut short.

Checklist

  • One concern; split if it approaches a thousand changed lines
  • Tests for every non-trivial branch; fixtures from the dev instance where the server is involved
  • detekt ktlintCheck lint alohaArchitectureCheck green, no baseline grown
  • Screenshots re-recorded only where the UI change is intended
  • Accessibility: labels, 48 dp targets, headings and paneTitle on new screens, 200 % font preview
  • Strings in strings.xml with translator comments
  • No new exported component, permission or dependency without a line here explaining it
  • docs/ updated where behaviour changed
  • AI tools were used for this contribution (commits carry Assisted-by:)

No UI, strings, permissions, exported components or dependencies change; the documented sign-in behaviour is unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The “adding account” state now clears whenever a sign-in completes, including when the account isn’t made active.
    • Replayed sign-in callbacks no longer trigger another token exchange.
    • Sign-in requests remain available after a callback with a mismatched state.

📝 Walkthrough

The sign-in flow now consumes OAuth callbacks before completion and preserves pending authorization on state mismatches. AccountRepository emits account IDs after sign-in, and AppViewModel clears its adding-account state when it receives each event.

Changes: Sign-in flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Callback completion and replay handling
feature/signin/src/main/kotlin/social/aloha/feature/signin/SignInViewModel.kt, core/data/src/main/kotlin/social/aloha/core/data/SignInCoordinator.kt, core/testing/src/test/kotlin/social/aloha/core/testing/SignInAcceptanceTest.kt
SignInViewModel consumes the callback before calling SignInCoordinator.complete. The coordinator clears pending authorization before handling callbacks except StateMismatch. The acceptance test checks that replay returns NotForUs and makes no second token-exchange request.
Account sign-in events and app state
core/data/src/main/kotlin/social/aloha/core/data/AccountRepository.kt, app/src/main/kotlin/social/aloha/android/AppViewModel.kt, core/testing/src/test/kotlin/social/aloha/core/testing/SignInsTest.kt
AccountRepository exposes a signIns flow and attempts to emit the account ID after storing and activating it. AppViewModel clears the adding-account state on each emission. The test checks emissions for new and repeated sign-ins.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 358a9

Sign-in can still occasionally leave account setup open or lose a callback, and concurrent callbacks can attempt a duplicate exchange. The change is mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up on these paths.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 358a9

The change improves sequential callback replay handling without identifying a new credential-disclosure or privilege-escalation path. Early cleanup introduces a bounded authentication-recovery tradeoff: interrupted completion may require starting authorization again, and shared sign-in and moderation consumers still lack a coordinated completion handoff.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Early cleanup removes the callback and pending authorization before completion reaches a terminal outcome. If completion is interrupted before account persistence finishes, the current authorization cannot resume through those handles. The shared moderation caller also depends on pending state and callback delivery, without a coordinated completion handoff. This is a bounded authentication-lifecycle concern rather than evidence of unauthorized access; the explicit no-retry contract and ability to start fresh authorization limit its impact.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected shared state represents one pending device authorization and one latest process-local callback. Its consumers include ordinary sign-in and moderation permission upgrades. The changed cleanup can affect that authorization and its resulting account credentials, but the inspected paths do not establish expanded server privileges or cross-device exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Externally supplied callback data enters through OAuthRedirectActivity. Completion still checks persisted expected state, and token exchange submits the persisted PKCE verifier and registration credentials. The reordered consumption does not bypass these controls or introduce a new credential sink.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — When sign-in and moderation collectors coexist, clearing the latest-value inbox before completion can prevent moderation from observing the callback. Moderation clears its authorizing state only after receiving a handled result. Shared ownership ambiguity predates the PR, but earlier consumption adds a possible missed-delivery interleaving; production reproduction remains unresolved.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider an atomic, authorization-identity-bound claim with an explicit completion owner and terminal outcome shared by consumers. Preserve the no-automatic-reexchange policy while making interruption lead to a clear restart-required outcome rather than relying on callback replay or incidental screen lifetime.

Inject the dispatchers in SignInsTest instead of hard-coding them.

The test hard-codes Dispatchers.Default for scope and Dispatchers.IO for TokenVault. The repository's Kotlin convention forbids hard-coded dispatchers, and no test-specific exception applies. Pass test dispatchers into the test setup so scheduling remains under test control.

Do not discard completed sign-in events.

When the signIns buffer is full, completed.tryEmit(id) can return false, and AccountRepository.signedIn() ignores that result. For an existing active account, the active-account collector does not run again because the ID is unchanged. SignInViewModel then treats the sign-in as successful without clearing AppViewModel.adding, so the setup screen can remain visible until the user cancels it.

Use the suspending emit(id) or another delivery mechanism that preserves completion events.

Make the pending-authorization claim atomic.

If two complete calls run concurrently, both can read the same pending authorization before either call to cancel() finishes. Both calls can then reach exchange, despite the single-exchange guarantee described here. Serialize the read-and-remove operation, or use an atomic claim, and test concurrent callbacks.

Consume the callback after completion claims it.

If the ViewModel is cleared after inbox.consume(callback) and before coordinator.complete(callback) finishes, coroutine cancellation can stop finish with the callback removed. The pending authorization then remains, but a recreated sign-in screen cannot process the callback from the inbox.

Move consumption after complete. The coordinator now claims non-mismatched authorizations before exchange, so retaining the callback during a canceled exchange does not allow the authorization to run again.

…count"

Adding a second account could stop on "Setting up your account…" for
good, even before a server was typed. Two causes met:

- The first sign-in ends the sign-in screen itself: once the account is
stored and active the app leaves it, and the work that took the
callback was cancelled before it cleared either the callback from its
inbox or the pending authorization. The next "Add account" found both,
finished the old sign-in again, and signed in the account already
there. The screen now takes the callback before acting on it, and the
coordinator claims the pending authorization before it asks anything,
so the same callback seen again finds nothing to finish.
- Adding ended only when the active account changed. With every account
shown together the first one is made active again at once, and an
account signed in again was active already, so that change could be
missed or never come. AccountRepository.signIns tells each sign-in,
  and adding ends on it.
