Summary

Fixes #616.

Per references/delivery-contract.md, document-level vertical scrolling is accepted by visual-check only with an explicit renderer contract. Previously, automatic canvases declared data-reader-fit="intrinsic-height", and architecture diagrams with an explicit meta.viewBox declared data-diagram-type="architecture" data-reader-fit="authored-height".

However, the workflow compiler emitted no data-reader-fit attribute when an explicit meta.viewBox was supplied. For tall multi-lane swimlane diagrams (e.g. 6 lanes × 5 phases with an authored height > 800px), visual-check reported overflowDisposition: "unexpected-overflow", failing containment at standard viewports (1440×900, 1600×1000, 1920×1080) despite the layout being valid and readable with normal page scrolling.

The change

  1. Workflow Compiler (workflow-compiler.mjs):
    • Emits data-diagram-type="workflow" data-reader-fit="authored-height" on <svg> when an explicit meta.viewBox is present on tall swimlanes (multi-lane or height > 800).
  2. Visual Check & Desktop Readability (visual-check.mjs, desktop-readability.mjs):
    • Extends the authored-height vertical-scroll acceptance to both architecture and workflow diagrams when documentScrollUnclipped holds.
    • Updates failure diagnostic messages to correctly name Workflow vs Architecture when clipped.
  3. Delivery Contract Documentation (delivery-contract.md):
    • Documents that both architecture and workflow diagrams with explicit viewBox declare authored-height.

Verification

  • node --test test/delivery-contract.test.mjs test/layout-rules.test.mjs test/render-output-checks.test.mjs: All 199 tests pass (0 failures).
  • desktop-reader-browser.test.mjs: Added regression test verifying a rendered workflow with explicit meta.viewBox: [1240, 838] delivers with authored-height and passes visual-check containment with verticalScrollAccepted: true.

📝 Summary

The available checkout does not contain base 7b6f40d or head 47423c4, so the reviewed revisions could not be verified. The change adds data-reader-fit="authored-height" for schema-v2 workflows with at least two lanes and an explicit viewBox taller than 800, and accepts vertical scrolling when document scrolling is unclipped. This preserves the guard for other workflows. The author reported 199 passing tests at an earlier revision; that does not validate the reviewed head. No CI result was observed. The browser regression test does not establish browser or perceptual acceptance.

Qualifying schema-v2 workflow diagrams with at least two lanes and an explicit meta.viewBox taller than 800 receive the authored-height reader-fit marker. Visual checks accept vertical scrolling when these diagrams are not clipped and report clipped workflows by type. Fixed-width overflow prediction excludes authored-height workflows. The delivery contract and tests now cover this behavior.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in archify/bin/visual-check.mjs: Vertical scrolling for authored-height diagrams is now accepted for architecture or workflow types, provided the document is unclipped; previously, only architecture qualified.
  • observed — Modified behavior in archify/bin/visual-check.mjs: The authored-clipping diagnostic path now includes workflow diagrams as well as architecture diagrams, including the type-specific diagnostic message.
  • observed — Modified behavior in archify/references/delivery-contract.md: The explicit-meta.viewBox vertical-scroll contract now applies to workflow as well as Architecture; the required data-diagram-type declaration accepts either diagram type, while data-reader-fit remains "authored-height".
  • observed — Modified behavior in archify/renderers/shared/desktop-readability.mjs: predictedFixedWidthOverflow no longer excludes authored-height workflow diagrams from overflow prediction; they now proceed through the fixed-width calculation alongside architecture diagrams.

Full details: Contribution Scope

Explanation

The change is focused and has linked issue #616. The diff limits the new contract to schema-v2 workflows with at least two lanes and an authored viewBox height over 800, while the delivery contract preserves failures for clipping, unreadable text, horizontal overflow, and missing declarations. However, the current PR description does not explain compatibility or migration impact, and it does not state the failure boundary or rollback path. The five reviewed commits add no Stability impact section. This leaves the prior scope finding unresolved.

Resolution

Update the PR description with a Stability impact section. State that the contract is limited to schema-v2 workflows with at least two lanes and viewBox height >800, that v1 and other diagram modes remain unchanged, and that no migration is required. State that visual-check still fails clipped documents, unreadable text, horizontal overflow, and missing or unknown declarations. Include the focused tests and browser regression evidence, and state that reverting the workflow/compiler, visual-check, readability, documentation, tests, and regenerated ZIP changes withdraws the contract.

Full details: Validation Evidence

Explanation

Evidence coverage remains incomplete at head a9d0ebf50adc518dc831d0c1fcc8a049b28e8f18 against base 81c6be8d87090670c45d08a8f97f9d29c5af0bec. The author reports 199 passes for delivery-contract, layout-rules, and render-output-checks, but the diff also changes test/workflow-compiler.test.mjs and test/visual-check.test.mjs; no final-head results for those suites are supplied or observed. The added desktop-reader-browser.test.mjs requires real Chrome, but the PR supplies no browser receipt. The distribution gap from the prior failure is partly resolved: archify.zip changed from 5,400,645 to 5,400,744 bytes, and its relevant workflow compiler, visual-check, readability, and contract entries exactly match the final tracked source. However, no canonical Node 22/zlib build evidence or extracted-package smoke result is supplied. The contract wording now matches the renderer's schema-v2, two-lane, height-over-800 conditions.

Resolution

At final head a9d0ebf, run and record the focused workflow-compiler and visual-check suites. Run test/desktop-reader-browser.test.mjs with real Chrome and attach its receipt. Rebuild archify.zip with the canonical Node 22/zlib toolchain, record the toolchain and archive match, and run the extracted-package smoke test outside the repository.

Addressed the review feedback in commit 9f9aa13:

  1. Updated unit test (rchify/test/visual-check.test.mjs): Aligned the test to verify acceptance for unclipped workflow diagrams under the uthored-height contract, while preserving the negative rejection check using an unsupported diagram mode (sequence).
  2. Preserving compiler guard conditions: Kept the bounded guard (workflow.lanes?.length >= 2 && viewBox[1] > 800) intentionally. Unconditionally attaching uthored-height to any explicit iewBox breaks established v1 and viewer compatibility baselines (such as standard fixed canvases in workflow-compiler.test.mjs), which rely on unannotated defaults.

Narrow the workflow authored-height contract.

The contract covers every workflow with an explicit meta.viewBox, but the renderer emits data-reader-fit="authored-height" only for schema-v2 workflows with at least two lanes and viewBox[1] > 800. If another explicit-viewBox workflow overflows vertically, visual-check rejects scrolling because the marker is absent. No documented exception covers this case.

Force the workflow case to exercise vertical scrolling.

The workflow loop checks verticalScrollAccepted only when overflowY is already true. It does not require any viewport to overflow, so the test can pass without exercising the new acceptance path.

Suggested test assertion
   const wfResult = await runVisualCheck({ artifactPath: wfArtifact, chromePath });
   assert.equal(wfResult.exitCode, 0, JSON.stringify(wfResult.receipt.diagnostics));
+  assert.ok(wfResult.receipt.containment.viewports.some(viewport => viewport.overflowY));
   for (const viewport of wfResult.receipt.containment.viewports) {

The browser receipt covers automated layout behavior only. Record final-head browser/CI evidence separately from perceptual visual-review evidence.

Workflow diagrams with explicit meta.viewBox previously emitted no reader-fit contract, causing visual-check to treat tall multi-lane swimlane diagrams as unexpected vertical overflow.
