Problem and value

Closes #1064.

Forwarded standalone Archify HTML can show its generator version but had no explicit, bounded way for a reader to discover a newer stable version. This PR adds a quiet update notice to Native Viewer and Explainer artifacts. Both remain offline-first: no polling, telemetry, persistence, credentials, or automatic installation is introduced.

Approach

  • Emit a local identity payload containing artifact type, generator version, content digest, and the project-owned stable manifest URL.
  • Show a keyboard-accessible version dialog. Only an explicit Check for update action requests that fixed manifest.
  • Strictly validate the manifest before presenting a newer stable version. Development artifacts return before any request; malformed manifests, including calendar-invalid timestamps, report the generic unavailable result.
  • Keep the readers aligned: Native Viewer and Explainer use the same externally observable update contract.

Scope and impact

  • This remains an update-only artifact slice. It does not add feedback submission, diagnostic copying, custom destinations, Issue routing, a new CI system, a renderer/schema rewrite, or delivery-receipt changes.
  • Reader chrome is local to standalone HTML; canonical exports remain unchanged.
  • The initial-load probe covers only the four instrumented JavaScript APIs: fetch, XHR, WebSocket, and EventSource. It does not claim to observe every browser network channel.

Validation

  • npm run test:generated — Viewer/validator freshness, release identity, schema enforcement, and root/package golden outputs.
  • npm run test:core — core smoke suite.
  • node --test --test-name-pattern "explainer reader update follows" test/reader-disclosure-browser.test.mjs — real Chromium coverage for Explainer: zero instrumented API calls for a development artifact, malformed and calendar-invalid manifests fail closed, and a valid manifest makes exactly one controlled fetch after explicit activation.
  • node --test test/explainer-renderer.test.mjs test/reader-disclosure.test.mjs — renderer and disclosure contracts.
  • git diff --check — whitespace validation.

The older overflowing reader-update.workflow fixture was removed and is not described as regenerated or repaired here.

AI assistance and accountability

  • AI assistance was used for investigation, implementation drafting, and test design.
  • I reviewed the final diff, ran the listed local validation, and remain accountable for this PR.
  • I have personally reviewed every line of code in this PR for correctness, security, and maintainability.

CodeRabbit blocks several paths by default. You can override this behavior by explicitly including those paths in the path filters. For example, including **/dist/** will override the default block on the dist directory, by removing the pattern from both the lists.

📝 Summary

This change adds opt-in stable-update checks to standalone Viewer and Explainer artifacts. Initial loads make no requests through the four instrumented JavaScript network APIs. After an explicit check, both readers apply the development-version and manifest-validation rules. Compatibility impact: existing artifacts remain usable without automatic update requests.

Reviewed base/head: e2385e3 / ac6263e. The author reports generated-artifact and test validation; these results are unverified here. Reused CI evidence at e2385e3 reports passing browser and WebM jobs and failing full-regression shards. CI was reported green at bd52443; no CI result for head ac6263e was supplied. This is an evidence snapshot, not a live CI status.

Standalone artifacts now include identity metadata and a Version control for an explicit stable-release check. The readers validate the manifest and compare its version with the artifact version. They display unavailable status, no newer version, or newer-version details. The change also updates gallery artifacts and their digest and size records, renderer and browser tests, and documentation.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Possibly related issues

  • tt-a1i/archify#1064 requests static identity and explicit update checks for forwarded standalone artifacts. This change implements update-awareness in Viewer and Explainer; feedback and issue routing remain outside its scope.
  • tt-a1i/archify#1068 audits the explicit update dialog and identifies this PR as establishing update-awareness. Its responsive and identity-polish phases remain separate.

Possibly related PRs

  • tt-a1i/archify#1069 records narrow-screen overflow in the Explainer after this PR adds its Version control and update dialog.
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ac626

The distributable archive still ships older update-check behavior and fails its delivery check. Refresh the archive before merging; the load-time network assertion also remains limited to four request APIs.

Full details: Contribution Scope

Explanation

The previous scope failure remains unresolved. CONTRIBUTING.md requires a related issue and explicit maintainer agreement for changes to interaction, generation, tests, or other behavior, and for new contracts. REVIEWING.md requires the agreed scope before detailed review. This PR changes the shared Viewer and Explainer templates, adds a renderer-neutral disclosure and manifest contract, and adds explicit update interaction across generated artifacts. The latest description explains the problem, offline-on-load compatibility, validation, and fail-closed behavior, but it provides no related issue or recorded maintainer scope decision. The external design reference and statement that feedback is deferred to a future issue do not record agreement for this change. The PR-range commit messages and repository search also show no issue or maintainer-decision reference.

Resolution

Add a linked issue or recorded maintainer scope decision to the PR description. Keep the scope limited to the static artifact identity and explicit fixed stable-manifest check, and retain the offline-on-load, compatibility, failure, and validation details.

Full details: Validation Evidence

Explanation

Validation evidence is incomplete and one material success claim is contradicted at evaluated head ac6263e against base b71d1b3. Observed: git diff --check passes; the browser suite is registered; current archify/explainer/reader.js now checks development versions before fetch and round-trips publishedAt; and its browser tests cover those cases. However, archify.zip was last changed before ac6263e, and its archify/explainer/reader.js member lacks both fixes. The repository freshness job compares the archive byte-for-byte and therefore has a concrete stale-package failure; the current review also reports the zip-freshness job failed at this head. The PR body claims a rebuilt archive and successful validation, but supplies no final-head receipts or result links. The earlier green evidence at bd52443 is not reusable because ac6263e changed the Explainer runtime and browser tests. The visible dialog change has browser automation, but the PR body provides no comparable visual evidence or perceptual-review status. It also omits the required AI-use, accountable-contributor, and human-review disclosures from CONTRIBUTING.md and the PR template.

Resolution

Contributor: rebuild and commit archify.zip from final head ac6263e with the canonical Node 22/zlib toolchain, then rerun and link the final-head ZIP freshness check. Provide final-head receipts for the affected generated, reader-disclosure browser/focused, full regression, and package-smoke checks, and identify any skips or failures. Add comparable visual evidence with viewport/theme/page-state conditions and a separate perceptual-review status. Complete the AI-use, tool/model, accountable-contributor, problem-origin, and human-review disclosures.

46-47: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the development-artifact result and poll for completion.

The intercepted manifest is valid, and the fixture uses development version 3.2.1-dev.1. /unavailable/i also matches the generic .catch message, so a failed fetch or rejected manifest can pass without exercising the intended branch.

No other assertion protects this outcome. Replace the broad match and poll until the checking status changes.

Suggested test fix
-  await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 50));
-  const update = await send('Runtime.evaluate', { returnByValue: true, expression: "document.getElementById('reader-disclosure-status').textContent" });
-  assert.match(update.result.value, /unavailable/i, 'a development artifact does not claim a stable update result');

+    if (update.result.value !== 'Checking the fixed stable manifest…') break;
+    await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 10));

+  assert.notEqual(update.result.value, 'Checking the fixed stable manifest…', 'the update check completed');
+  assert.match(update.result.value, /development artifact/i, 'a valid manifest with a development artifact does not claim a stable update result');

Observe HTTP(S) requests before navigation.

The current counter is installed after Page.loadEventFired, so it cannot detect a request that starts during navigation. The reader runtime currently calls fetch only from the explicit reader-update-check click handler, so this is a coverage gap rather than a demonstrated product defect. Use the existing CDP request-event pattern to cover the network-silent initial load.

Reviewing e2385e3: the browser and WebM jobs in run 39910616872 now pass, but both full-regression shards still fail. The Node 22 aggregate gate consequently skips its downstream suites. Could you include the failing test names and assertion excerpts for both shards, tied to this SHA? Our log retrieval currently fails, so we have not established their cause.

Separately, the current no-request-on-load assertion reads window.__readerUpdateRequests || 0 after navigation and installs the fetch counter afterward. It therefore cannot observe requests made during initial loading. Please provide coverage that starts observing before navigation for native Viewer and Explainer, and keeps initial-load observations distinct from the explicit update action.

The previous overflowing workflow example was removed, so it should not be described as a repaired layout. This note requests validation evidence only; it does not approve the runtime-network scope or merging.

Final validation is green at bd5244388fedd4e74462fb04c588bbbea5c18956.

For the earlier e2385e3 run, the exact failures were: checked-in Checkout compare artifact is reproducible from its authoritative inputs (byte-for-byte artifact mismatch), browser shards are deterministic, nonempty, disjoint and cover the full maintained inventory (two heavy suites landed in the same modulo shard), property: shuffling node/state order still renders (order-independence) (workflow seed 1: NaN in output), waterfall: finite very large timing labels do not overflow while formatting, generated proof gallery matches its sources, receipts, and checked-in artifacts (checked-in gallery output is stale), and the five icon overrides and hiding preserve all non-icon output cases.

The fixes restore the inventory parity, prevent the generated reader code from tripping the NaN/Infinity output gates, compare icon output while accounting for the intentional content identity digest, and re-derive Checkout compare, gallery, README showcase, root/package examples, and the deterministic ZIP. The final source also fails closed for calendar-invalid manifest timestamps; development artifacts do not fetch a manifest they cannot use; malformed manifests report the generic unavailable state.

Browser coverage now installs CDP observers before navigation for Native Viewer and Explainer. Both prove zero initial fetch/XHR/WebSocket/EventSource activity; the stable Native explicit Check action produces exactly one controlled fetch to the fixed stable manifest. This PR does not describe the removed overflowing workflow fixture as a layout repair: that workflow was removed. It remains an update-only artifact slice, with feedback/issue routing deferred.

Current CI passed: both full-regression and browser shards, Node 22 aggregate, Windows Node 22/24 portability, macOS/Ubuntu/Windows package smoke, WebM/decode, website, release-manifest, and ZIP freshness.

Verified head bd5244388fedd4e74462fb04c588bbbea5c18956: CI is green, and the reader-update tests actually executed in browser shard 1.

The source still has a Native/Explainer mismatch:

  • Native rejects normalized invalid calendar dates, returns before fetching for development artifacts, and reports invalid manifests as a generic unavailable result.
  • Explainer still checks development status after fetching, labels invalid manifests as a development artifact, and only checks whether Date.parse returns NaN rather than validating calendar-date round trips.

The development/no-request and malformed-date tests exercise native workflow output; the Explainer case covers initial load only. Please clarify the intended Explainer behavior and provide matching acceptance evidence. The current native results do not establish the same behavior for both readers. The pre-navigation probe covers four instrumented JS APIs, not every browser network channel.

Please also associate #1064 explicitly in the PR body and remove the obsolete claim that the deleted reader-update.workflow example was regenerated.

This is an evidence/coverage review, not approval of the runtime-network scope or permission to merge.

@tt-a1i Follow-up for #6360697745 — addressed at final head 01d90b5.

  • Reader parity: Explainer now follows the Native Viewer contract: a development artifact returns before any manifest request; malformed manifests, including calendar-invalid timestamps that Date.parse normalizes, report the generic unavailable result.
  • Explainer browser evidence: the generated Explainer is exercised in Chromium for development/no-request, malformed manifest, calendar-invalid publishedAt, and valid stable manifest. The valid explicit check makes exactly one controlled request; initial load and development paths make none.
  • Probe boundary: the test observes only the four instrumented JavaScript APIs — fetch, XHR, WebSocket, and EventSource — and the PR body now states that it does not cover every browser network channel.
  • PR metadata: the body explicitly closes feat(reader): voluntary feedback and update awareness for standalone artifacts #1064 and no longer claims the removed reader-update.workflow fixture was regenerated or repaired.
  • Generated delivery: rebuilt archify.zip with the canonical Node 22 toolchain; final zip-freshness passes.

Final CI: https://github.com/tt-a1i/archify/actions/runs/39961681488

All required checks for this revision are green: full-regression and browser shards, Node aggregate, Windows portability, package smoke on Ubuntu/macOS/Windows, WebM/decode, website, manifest, and ZIP freshness. The two deployment jobs are expected skips. This reply supplies the requested evidence only; it does not treat the review as approval or a request to merge.
