WIP

Description

The applet model separates course-team role definitions from the permissions contributed by each capability. This means a static role such as course_staff must be valid before any role extension adds permissions. The current JSON Schema requires every role to contain at least one permission, although validation, compilation, and rendering already support an empty base role.

This PR gives role definitions their own permission-list schema, which allows an empty list. The permission lists used by role_extensions keep their existing non-empty requirement, so an extension that declares add_permissions or remove_permissions must still include at least one permission.

Merge checklist:

  • Fixup commits are squashed away
  • Unit tests added/updated
  • Manual testing instructions provided
  • Noted any: Concerns, dependencies, migration issues, deadlines, tickets

Where can I find more information?

If you'd like to get more details on all aspects of the review process for open source pull requests (OSPRs), check out the following resources:

When can I expect my changes to be merged?

Our goal is to get community contributions seen and reviewed as efficiently as possible.

However, the amount of time that it takes to review and merge a PR can vary significantly based on factors such as:

  • The size and impact of the changes that it introduces
  • The need for product review
  • Maintenance status of the parent repository

💡 As a result it may take up to several weeks or months to complete a review and merge your PR.
