fix(inbox): a wake note that entered the conversation is read - #73
The wake note carries the full body (≤4096 B), but only ocs read moved the read cursor, so ocs inbox, the status bar and the unread: line of send/dm kept counting messages the session had already seen. Models then ran an extra ocs read (seen in the 0.9.14/0.9.15 trial).
Evidence of "read" = the session's own host record shows the note entered the conversation (docs/wake-protocol.md §7, src/seen-wakes.ts):
Host
Record
Counts
Claude Code
~/.claude/projects/*/<session>.jsonl
attachment.type == queued_command; type == user string turn (idle new turn, channel event)
Codex (queue/steer)
rollout
response_item message with role: user
Pi
~/.pi/agent/sessions/*/*_<id>.jsonl
type: message, role: user
Text must start with the wake header (Claude: after the ocs wrapper and Claude's one-line preamble). Tool output, model replies and developer text quoting a header do not count. Truncated previews (>4096 B) do not count. A coalesced wake proves only its own seq.
Delivery success never counts (iron rule 4); held Claude messages have only an enqueue record.
Own-session files only: same uid, regular file, no symlinks; last 8 MiB. Not used with explicit --as / OCS_NAME. Codex Desktop delegation, OpenCode, Hermes, Grok and agy have no evidence source yet and keep cursor-only behaviour.
Seen messages are excluded; the cursor is persisted over the contiguous seen prefix only (an unseen message stops it), and is never written for a channel with no evidence.
Verification
test/seen-wakes.test.ts 9 tests; mutation check: 12 guards → all red.
Real host: this session's ocs inbox went from 5 unread to 0 in the DM thread whose replies had arrived as wakes; threads with no transcript evidence stayed unread. Timing unchanged (~0.17–0.19 s).
Local full suite: same 4 environment-only failures as main.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Messages whose wake note appears in the sender’s own session conversation are no longer counted as unread in the inbox, status bar, or send/dm unread count. The read cursor advances past consecutive messages confirmed as seen.
This applies to supported Claude, Codex, and Pi session records. Successful delivery alone does not mark a message as read; held messages, truncated previews, and messages on other hosts remain unread.
The note carries the full body, but only `ocs read` moved the cursor, so inbox, the status
bar and the send/dm unread line kept counting messages the session had already seen.
- read evidence comes only from the session's own host record: Claude transcript
(queued_command attachment / user string turn), Codex rollout user item, Pi user message;
the text must start with the wake header and not be a truncated preview
- delivery success never counts (held Claude messages only have an enqueue record)
- seen messages are excluded and the cursor advances over the seen prefix only
- protocol doc §7

Walkthrough
The change adds wake-note read evidence from Claude, Codex, and Pi session records. The CLI passes applicable evidence to inbox processing, which excludes matching messages from unread results and advances the cursor through a contiguous read prefix.
The parser recognizes supported wake headers and extracts evidence from specified user conversation records. Tests cover accepted formats and excluded record types.
Locate and select the host session src/seen-wakes.ts, src/cli.ts, test/seen-wakes.test.ts
The code locates trusted Claude, Codex, or Pi session records and uses evidence for applicable implicit host identities. Tests cover session lookup cases.
Filter unread messages and advance the cursor src/inbox.ts, test/seen-wakes.test.ts, docs/wake-protocol.md, CLAUDE.md, CHANGELOG.md
Inbox processing excludes messages with matching seen evidence and advances the cursor only through a contiguous read prefix. Tests and documentation specify the evidence rules and limits.

If another user can write to the session-record directory, they can replace the checked file before readTail opens it. A forged record can then hide unread messages and advance the cursor.
Open the final path component with O_NOFOLLOW where available. Use fstatSync(fd) to check the opened file’s owner and type and to obtain its size. The descriptor check also rejects a replacement regular file owned by another user.
