A small, realistic project that consumes
pre-commit-checklists
the way a real user would, so you can see the library working before you
adopt it yourself: real sample files, a real .pre-commit-config.yaml
pinned to a rev: tag, and real hooks catching real problems.
This is not the library itself, and not another copy of it. It is a tiny log rotation and disk usage utility, the kind of small script collection almost every project ends up with, wired up to fourteen of the library's hook ids.

.editorconfig, .yamllint.yml, .markdownlint.yaml, and .cspell.json
are the tool configs the hooks above need; each was copied straight from
the library's templates/ directory.
.coveragerc, sonar-project.properties and the coverage target in the
Makefile are not the library's. They hold this repository's
own code at 100% test coverage (the Python by lines and branches, the shell
by lines) and feed SonarQube Cloud, see
docs/MERGE_PIPELINE.md. The coverage hook at the
end of .pre-commit-config.yaml is the one local
hook there, and a consumer of the library has no reason to copy it.
checklist-git-valid-branches, checklist-git-commit-msg, and
checklist-git-protected-branches aren't file-based; they run against your
branch name and commit message instead, see below.
checklist-dev-docker needs Docker on PATH, since hadolint-docker
runs in a container through pre-commit's own docker_image language
support, which shells out to the docker binary specifically (Podman
does not substitute here, unlike checklist-dev-dotenv's local hook);
every other hook id here needs nothing beyond pre-commit and
detect-secrets.
Not every hook id the library ships is wired up here. There's no
.env file, no .tf, .js, .ts, .json, or .xml file in this demo,
so checklist-dev-dotenv, checklist-dev-terraform,
checklist-dev-javascript, checklist-dev-typescript, checklist-json,
and checklist-xml are left out of
.pre-commit-config.yaml rather than listed
with nothing to check. This utility reads its settings from
config.yaml, not a .env file, so there is no genuine
.env file to wire checklist-dev-dotenv up to either. checklist-github-actions
used to be on this list too, before this repository grew a real merge
pipeline of its own (see docs/MERGE_PIPELINE.md);
it now lints and audits .github/workflows/ the same
way checklist-dev-docker lints Dockerfile. See the
library's hook catalogue for the ones still left out.
pip install pre-commit detect-secrets
pre-commit install
pre-commit run --all-filesYou'll also need Docker on PATH for checklist-dev-docker, which runs
hadolint-docker in a container against Dockerfile.
Every other hook id here needs nothing beyond pre-commit and
detect-secrets.
Or run it in devcontainer-airlock, which carries
all of that in containers (and make test for this repository's test
suite), and needs only rootless Podman on the host.
Try a commit too, since the commit-msg stage above only runs on a real
git commit, not on pre-commit run --all-files:
git commit --allow-empty -m "not a conventional commit" # rejected
git commit --allow-empty -m "docs: try the commit-msg hook" # accepted.pre-commit-config.yaml's repo: line points
straight at the published library on GitHub:
repo: https://github.com/ivan-pinatti-labs/pre-commit-checklists
rev: v2.2.5This used to point at a local, tagged clone while the library was
unpublished, and swapping the repo: value for the real GitHub URL was
the only line that changed once ivan-pinatti/pre-commit-checklists went
public, since rev: v1.0.0 already matched the tag the library used for
its first release.
Both the library and this demo have since transferred from the personal
ivan-pinatti account to the ivan-pinatti-labs organization, which is
why repo: above reads ivan-pinatti-labs rather than ivan-pinatti
even though the earlier releases in the history below still shipped under
the personal account at the time. This repository's own merge pipeline
(see docs/MERGE_PIPELINE.md) was ported in as
part of that same move.
The pin has since moved from v1.0.0 to v2.2.5. v1.1.0 switched
checklist-dev-dotenv from a Python dotenv-linter to a Rust one that
needs Docker or Podman, and set require_serial: true on every checklist
hook id; neither change required editing this demo's
.pre-commit-config.yaml, since this demo
does not select checklist-dev-dotenv (see What's here).
v1.1.1, v1.1.2, v1.2.0, and v1.2.1 made no changes that reach any
hook id this demo selects: those releases only touched scripts, docs, and
tests. v2.0.0 removed the megalinter-full hook entirely, a breaking
change this demo never selected in the first place. v2.0.1 and v2.0.2
were test and doc only releases. v2.1.0 added zizmor security audits
to checklist-github-actions, a hook id this demo did not select at the
time; it does now, wired up to the real .github/workflows/ this
repository's own merge pipeline added (see What's here).
v2.1.1 changed the library's own PR validation workflow template to
stop committing and pushing auto fixes back to a pull request branch;
.github/workflows/pull-request.yml
in this demo is a separate, independently maintained copy that already
runs pre-commit as a plain gate with no push step, so nothing here
needed to change for that either. v2.1.2 through v2.2.4 made no
changes that reach any hook id this demo selects. v2.2.5 fixed the
branch-name regex in check-branch-name.sh, the script behind
checklist-git-valid-branches, a hook id this demo does select: before
the fix, a branch name containing https-/ (how Dependabot encodes a
https:// hook-repository URL when it names a branch after one) was
rejected outright. No branch used in this demo takes that shape, so the
fix changed nothing observable here.
Verified on this machine, against the real
https://github.com/ivan-pinatti-labs/pre-commit-checklists URL and
rev: v2.2.5 tag, after clearing pre-commit's cache so the fetch came
from GitHub rather than a cached clone, with commands and exit codes
recorded when this was last run:
pre-commit run --all-files: every hook above runs, fetched fresh from GitHub, includingchecklist-dev-dockerlintingDockerfile.- A real
git committhrough the installed hooks, covering both thepre-commitandcommit-msgstages: a non-conventional message is rejected and never lands, a conventional one succeeds. - A deliberately planted fake secret was caught and blocked by
checklist-security-credentialsbefore being removed again.
