App freezes when switching to a third-party keyboard (Typewise) #1738
Thank you for your feedback! 🙏 Arnaud (@isontheline) will respond within a few hours. In the meantime, please feel free to add any additional information that may help us resolve or improve WebSSH.
Here are the last 2 crashes that I found in the analysis data on my iPhone. (I have more since 29th of Sept)I just clicked back and forth on the world symbol in the iOS keyboard to change the keyboard from iOS to 3rd party (here, typewise) then it freezes. Same happens if you click on your keyboard button in the top middle of your app.
Thanks for these two reports, I will try to find useful data from them
I don't have received on the App Store the crash reports, perhaps because you should have denied to share them with Apple/Developers? (System setting)
Yes you are right. I have enabled the setting now, reproduced the issue. Once it crashed a popup appeared to share the details about the crash with the developer. I have done this now some Minutes ago.
I have repeated my test and disabled state bar, no crash but still with lags. Then I also disabled the keyboard bar and then it crashed again. I have sent the report again via test flight.
It's not a real crash, the app hangs. The CPU report shows it
stuck redrawing the screen layout for almost 2 minutes, while memory
grows from 11 MB to 778 MB. Maybe the keyboard change triggers a
layout update that never ends.
The other report only comes from my force-quit. That's probably
why you get no crash report, because iOS doesn't report a hang as a
crash.
My Typewise setup: hexagon layout, German, English (US) and
Turkish, full access on.
If you symbolicate the CPU report with your debug symbols (build
1846), it should show which view is stuck.
I don‘t know if it helps, let me know if I can do anything to further assist.
I bisected the TestFlight builds with the same steps
(switch from the iOS keyboard to Typewise with the globe key):
32.4 (1765): no freeze
1802, 1820, 1826: no freeze
32.10 (1828): no freeze
32.10 (1829): no freeze <- last good build
32.10 (1830): freezes <- first bad build (verified twice,
froze on the first try)
1835, 1839, 33.0 (1841), 33.1 (1847): freeze
According to the release notes, 1830 only added 1time.io v3
support (#1713) and search on buffer (#539). Could the buffer
search UI react to the keyboard height change? Typewise has a
different height than the iOS keyboard, and the CPU report showed
the app stuck in layout for ~2 minutes.

Hey @jullbo 👋
Thanks a lot for your report 🙏
Have you some time to make the crash again against this beta release?
https://testflight.apple.com/join/QSrBK59z
It will help me to receive a full crash report to better understand the root issue.
Have a great day ☀️

Just received crash reports, I will look at them this afternoon

In fact instead of the crash report I only received this feedback report :
{ "id" : "REDACTED", "timestamp" : "2026-10-03T20:27:01.472Z[UTC]", "appAppleId" : 497714887, "cfBundleShortVersion" : "33.1", "cfBundleVersion" : "1846", "deviceModel" : "iPhone17,3", "osVersion" : "26.6.2", "locale" : "de-DE", "carrier" : "Vodafone.de", "timezone" : "REDACTED", "architecture" : "arm64e", "connectionStatus" : "WI_FI", "pairedAppleWatch" : "", "appUptimeMillis" : null, "availableDiskBytes" : 18963959808, "totalDiskBytes" : 127317213184, "networkType" : null, "batteryPercentage" : 25, "screenWidth" : 393, "screenHeight" : 852, "emailAddress" : "REDACTED", "comment" : "Hi sure, I have installed the test flight version and reproduced the crash. Let me know if you need more. " }That's strange, I'm searching why

@jullbo I've just identified a possible root cause.
Could you hide the State Bar (by using the "..." top right menu) and make your test again?

I'm trying to reproduce on my iPhone with Typewise but without success yet, no freeze yet

I had a look at the two .ips files I attached:

I've tried with no luck unfortunately:(
If you have some time, you can rollback to a previous release if you think WebSSH is the root cause :
https://testflight.apple.com/join/QSrBK59z
Maybe it can help me to find the binary which introduce the trouble

@jullbo Thank you so much for your feedback about the last good build 🙏
Your assumption seems a very good start, I'm looking deeper inside it right now
isontheline commentedon Oct 6, 2026
A (possible) fix will be provided soon
"Possible" because I can't reproduce but I'm pretty confident thanks to your strong feedback about the root cause
isontheline commentedon Oct 6, 2026
@jullbo Please try latest WebSSH 33.1.1848 : https://testflight.apple.com/join/QSrBK59z
jullbo commentedon Oct 6, 2026
1848 is not crashing/freezing anymore. What ever you did, it seems to fix the issue!!
jullbo commentedon Oct 6, 2026
Thanks for the fix!

You're welcome!
Thank you too for your strong feedback and your patience about the fix 🙏
