fix(agy): keep chat on long sessions whose catalog passes 32 MiB - #2697
agyCatalog refused any WAL catalog whose .db + .db-wal passed 32 MiB. A long Antigravity session's database grows with its payloads (the issue's is 23.5 MB), and the WAL grows by tens of MB during a turn before agy checkpoints it, so chat fell back to the terminal ("transcript_missing") for the whole turn, and for good once the .db alone reached 32 MiB.
Fix
Copy up to 64 MiB instead of 32 MiB (CATALOG_BYTES; the ledger's own 32 MiB read budget is unchanged). That covers the issue's 54 MiB store; a higher bound waits for the copy to leave the main thread (Agy catalog copy still blocks the server's main thread on large conversation stores #2706), since near 256 MiB one copy blocks the server for about a second.
Keep the last catalog per database (at most 32), keyed on the dev/ino/size/mtime/ctime of the pinned .db and -wal it copied. A catalog whose files had not changed for 2 s when it was copied is reused while they stay unchanged, so an idle store is no longer copied on every read. A reused catalog goes through the same final checks on every pinned file as a fresh copy.
Known cost (Agy catalog copy still blocks the server's main thread on large conversation stores #2706): while a turn writes the store, each page read still copies it twice on the main thread, as main already does for every store under 32 MiB. For the issue's 24 MiB + 30 MiB store that is ~300 ms per read; moving the copy off the main thread is tracked there. A throttle that shared one copy for 2 s was tried and dropped: it hid a final answer until the next backstop read and defeated withAgyHistory's consistency check.
Reproduction
On origin/main (12a7c63), the new test builds a live WAL catalog of 24 MiB checkpointed + ~10 MiB WAL (the issue's shape) and agyCatalog throws AgyUnavailable; with the fix it returns all 34 indices, a second read makes no snapshot write, and a new WAL row is picked up.
Validation
bun run check fast: green at the head (workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build, unit tests).
bun test server/agy.test.ts: 12 pass, 3 runs; the new test fails on origin/main and on each earlier head of this PR.
server/api.contract.test.ts "Agy conversation API" could not run locally (its fixture process does not start here, on clean origin/main too); CI's integration job covers it.
A long Antigravity session's conversation database plus its WAL passes 32 MiB during a turn, and agyCatalog then refused the catalog, so chat fell back to the terminal. Copy up to 256 MiB, and reuse the last catalog while the pinned database and WAL are unchanged, so an idle store is not copied on every read.
Fixes#2618
Antigravity chat can continue working with larger conversation databases and write-ahead logs, avoiding a fallback to the terminal for catalogs that exceed 32 MiB.
Repeated reads of an unchanged catalog no longer create unnecessary snapshots. Changes to the catalog are still reflected in a new snapshot.
The Antigravity catalog snapshot limit increases from 32 MiB to 256 MiB. The catalog caches validated active indices for unchanged database and WAL files, and clears the cache when forgetAgyState runs. Tests cover large snapshots and cache behavior.

Summary
Snapshot limits and catalog caching server/agy.ts, server/agy.test.ts, changelog.d/agy-long-session-chat.md
agyCatalog accepts database and WAL snapshots up to 256 MiB. It reuses cached indices when file stats are unchanged and records validated indices for changed snapshots. forgetAgyState clears the cache. Tests cover reads above 32 MiB, unchanged reads, and reads after a row is added. The changelog describes the long-session fallback and unchanged-catalog read behavior.
devswha/ovis#1727: Introduced the 32 MiB combined database-and-WAL snapshot limit that this change raises.

Review: a same-size rewrite within one timestamp tick could keep a stale catalog, a reused catalog skipped the pathname checks, and the cache was unbounded.
HIGH (unreproduced here; needs a same-size WAL rewrite within one timestamp tick): a catalog is now reused only when the copied files' mtime and ctime are at least 2 s older than the read, so a later rewrite always changes a timestamp. The test checks that a fresh read is copied again.
MEDIUM: a reused catalog now rechecks that the paths still name the pinned database and WAL; the test replaces the database between its open and the check and expects AgyUnavailable (fails without the recheck).
MEDIUM: the cache is bounded to the 32 most recently read catalogs.
Validation for 56ef589: bun test server/agy.test.ts 12 pass (3 runs); bun run build && bun run test:unit pass. bun run check fast typecheck still fails only on the 4 pre-existing errors in server/herdr-core/adapter.ts from origin/main.

indexes, updating its recency when an existing entry is refreshed so the oldest
catalog is removed when the limit is exceeded.
- Line 73: Ensure agyCatalog does not copy large stores synchronously on the
server’s main thread: either move the copy to an appropriate file thread while
preserving the existing read and cache behavior, or reject stores above the
previous 32 MiB limit before copying. Update the snapshotFiles size check and
CATALOG_BYTES only if restoring that limit; do not assume a fileTask integration
without verifying the surrounding logic.

Review: a reused catalog skipped the -shm path and the pinned size and time checks, so a database truncated during the read still returned the cached rows.
Codex (Terra) re-review of 56ef589: no HIGH. Addressed in a8f57be, then merged origin/main (22cfae7):
MEDIUM (reproduced: agyCatalog(path, () => truncateSync(dbPath, 0)) returned cached rows): a reused catalog now goes through the same final checks as a fresh copy (every pinned file's path, size, mtime and ctime, including -shm, and side-file presence). The test case fails on 56ef589 and passes now.
MEDIUM (not changed): while the database or WAL changed in the last 2 s, each read still copies them. Measured on this host (tmpfs /tmp): 24+10 MiB takes ~40 ms per catalog read, 96+32 MiB ~140 ms. Before this PR those stores did not load at all; reusing a catalog for files still being written is what the settle rule exists to prevent, so it stays. The changelog now says a catalog unchanged for a few seconds is not copied on every read.
Clock skew between the filesystem and the server (Codex note on the 2 s rule): LOW, a local store's timestamps come from the same kernel clock.
Validation at 22cfae7: bun run check fast all green (workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build, unit tests). bun test server/agy.test.ts 12 pass (3 runs). server/api.contract.test.ts "Agy conversation API" fails locally in check run with "fixture Agy process did not start" on clean origin/main too (local environment), so CI's integration job is the check for it.
Review: during a turn the database and WAL change on every read, so no catalog was reused and each page read copied the store twice on the main thread (130-290 ms per read for 24 MiB + 30 MiB). Reads within 2 s of a copy now share it; a lagging catalog only delays new steps.
omo review of 22cfae7: BLOCK on a reproduced MEDIUM. During a turn the catalog files change on every read, so nothing was reused and each page read copied the store twice on the main thread. Fixed in d016824: a changing catalog is copied at most once every 2 s and reads in between share it. With 24 MiB + 30 MiB and a row written before each read, a page read went from 130-290 ms to ~70 ms once per 2 s and 0-1 ms otherwise. The test now drives the clock (Date.now stub keyed to the files' times), which also removes omo's LOW about slow runners. The remaining synchronous copy is #2706. CodeRabbit's two comments on d885524 (unbounded cache, synchronous copy) are covered by 56ef589 and d016824 / #2706. bun run check fast green at d016824.
Review: serving a lagging catalog for 2 s hid a final answer written inside the window until the client's 10 s backstop read, and made withAgyHistory's consistency check always pass. Back to copying a changing catalog on each read (#2706 tracks moving that copy off the main thread). The test now stubs Date.now from the files' own times, so a slow runner cannot settle the first read.
omo review of d016824: BLOCK on two reproduced MEDIUMs from the copy throttle. A final answer written inside the 2 s window stayed hidden until the client's 10 s backstop read, because no later file change triggers another read. And withAgyHistory's second catalog read always got the cached rows, so a rewind during the read was no longer rejected. Making a lagging catalog safe needs a guaranteed later read from the change monitor, which is beyond this fix. So deddd83 drops the throttle: server/agy.ts is again identical to 22cfae7. The test keeps the stubbed clock, now taken from the files' own times, so a slow runner cannot settle the first read (omo's LOW on 22cfae7).
What is left is the synchronous copy during a turn (omo's MEDIUM on 22cfae7), tracked in #2706. It is the cost main already pays for every store under 32 MiB, now extended to larger stores that previously did not load at all. Idle stores are no longer copied on every read.
…hread
Review: near the 256 MiB cap a fresh copy blocks the server for about a second, and while a turn writes every page read copies twice. 64 MiB still covers the issue's 54 MiB store; #2706 tracks moving the copy off the main thread.
omo review of deddd83 (second run): BLOCK on the reproduced synchronous copy cost near the 256 MiB cap (~0.8-1.2 s per fresh copy, twice per page read while a turn writes). 63105e1 lowers CATALOG_BYTES to 64 MiB as it suggested: the issue's 54 MiB store still loads, and the worst case stays about twice main's 32 MiB bound until #2706 moves the copy off the main thread. Also merged origin/main (#2684). bun run check fast green at 63105e1; bun test server/agy.test.ts 12 pass, 3 runs.
Merge note: CodeRabbit reviewed d885524 only (its thread answered and resolved); merged on the omo review (CLEAR at 63105e1), Codex Terra (findings fixed), and green required checks. Copy budget is 64 MiB until #2706 moves the copy off the main thread.
