When a connection requires the user's email address or phone number to be verified at signup, passkey.register() returns verificationRequired and Auth0 sends a one-time code to each listed identifier. The app collects the codes and passes them to passkey.getToken() as verification. On a wrong code, PasskeyGetTokenError has isRetryable set, the same authSession and the identifiers that still need a code, so the app can retry with the same credential and the user sees no second passkey prompt. ServerPasskeyClient forwards these options and results through @auth0/auth0-auth-js, which now has to be 1.17.0 or later. An older version ignores deliveryMethod and verification without an error. - Raise the @auth0/auth0-auth-js dependency to ^1.17.0. - Export the PasskeyVerificationIdentifier, PasskeyDeliveryMethod and PasskeyVerificationCodes types, and the PasskeyApiErrorResponse and PasskeyGetTokenApiErrorResponse types of the errors' cause. - Document deliveryMethod, verificationRequired, verification, the retry and the error outcomes in the JSDoc and in a new EXAMPLES.md section with a stateless server and browser flow, and note in MFA.md that passkey.getToken() can also require MFA. - Add tests for the request shapes, each error outcome, the retry and resolver mode. …e passkey signup example The finish route answers a rate limit with `wait`. The browser loop now handles it: it waits for the user and sends the same authSession, credential and codes again, without asking for new codes or starting a new signup. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
An mfa_required error from passkey.getToken() is not new, and EXAMPLES.md already covers it. The note also said that a user who has just signed up should use the enrollment flow, which is not always true: an MFA policy or an Action can ask for a challenge instead. The EXAMPLES.md errors table now just points to MFA.md for how to continue. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

A non-retryable
PasskeyGetTokenErrorwithstatusCode429 falls under “Anything else,” which tells the app to start a new registration. The finish-route example instead returnswait, and the browser retries with the sameauthSession, credential, and codes. Following the table can start an unnecessary new registration while the original attempt remains open.Suggested fix
-| Anything else | Treat the attempt as finished and start again with `passkey.register()`. This covers too many wrong codes, the time limit running out, and an unknown or already-used session. Restarting sends new codes, so let the user decide. … errors table The "Anything else" row told apps to start a new signup on a rate limit, while the finish route answers it with `wait` and the browser sends the same codes again. The table now has a row for a `statusCode` of 429 that matches the example, and the bullet that repeated it is removed. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

Low: the requirements ask apps to cap their own retries, because Auth0's response never says how many attempts are left. This loop has no counter, and examples tend to get copied as written. Could you add a small retry counter, plus a sentence in the security notes explaining why, and restart from register() once the cap is hit?

Nit: this test and the "omits verification" one below it pin that empty verification codes are silently dropped, which matches auth0-auth-js 1.17.0. Req 9 in the requirements (SHOULD HAVE) says an empty verification or empty code should fail on the client and send nothing. Is the current behavior intended? If so, a short comment above the tests saying why would help. If not, it probably belongs in a follow-up on auth0-auth-js.

Low: the docs recommend passing auth0-forwarded-for through requestOptions.headers on register() and getToken(). By reading composeRequestFetch it should reach both requests, but no test here asserts it. Could you add one MSW test for each call that checks the header arrives? That would protect the behavior the docs rely on.
Description
When a connection requires it, native passkey signup asks the user to verify their email address or phone number with a one-time code before the session is created. This PR adds that to
auth0-server-js, on top of theauth0-auth-jssupport from #300, released inauth0-auth-js1.17.0.How the flow works
passkey.register()returnsverificationRequired(for example['email', 'phone']), and Auth0 sends a one-time code to each listed identifier during that call. The property is absent when nothing needs to be verified.deliveryMethod('text'or'voice') chooses how the phone code is delivered. When it is left out, Auth0 uses the channel the connection supports.passkey.getToken()asverification, for example{ email: '123456', phone: '654321' }.passkey.getToken()throws aPasskeyGetTokenErrorwithisRetryableset totrue, the sameauthSession, and the identifiers that still need a code. The app calls it again with the sameauthSessionand credential, so the user does not see a second passkey prompt. What this PR changes
@auth0/auth0-auth-jsdependency to^1.17.0.ServerPasskeyClientpasses the new options toauth0-auth-jsand returns its results and errors unchanged, and an olderauth0-auth-jsignoresdeliveryMethodandverificationwithout an error.PasskeyVerificationIdentifier,PasskeyDeliveryMethodandPasskeyVerificationCodestypes, so apps and the SDKs built on this package can type their routes without importingauth0-auth-js. It also exportsPasskeyApiErrorResponseandPasskeyGetTokenApiErrorResponse, the types of the errors'cause.register(),challenge()andgetToken().EXAMPLES.md, "Verifying the Email or Phone Number at Signup". It has a stateless Fastify example with a start route and a finish route, the browser steps, what to do for each error, and security notes: rate-limit the start route (each call sends new codes), forward the end user's IP address, add CSRF protection to the finish route, never log the codes or the whole error, and validate the request body instead of passing it togetToken().server-passkey-client.spec.ts.There is no runtime code change in
ServerPasskeyClientitself.Impact on other packages
auth0-tanstack-start-reactderives its passkey types from this client, so it gets the new fields with no code change. I checked that its type derivations still compile against this build.auth0-expressandauth0-fastifydo not use the passkey API yet.References
Testing
New tests in
server-passkey-client.spec.ts:register():deliveryMethodis sent asdelivery_method('text'and'voice') and left out when it is not set.verificationRequiredis returned for the email address, the phone number and both, and it is absent when nothing needs to be verified. The 15 minutetimeoutreaches the browser unchanged. An unsupported phone channel, a code that could not be sent and a plain-text 429 surface as aPasskeyRegisterErrorwith the rightstatusCode.getToken():verificationis sent as an object, an empty code is left out, and noverificationis sent when nothing is left. A wrong code is retryable and stores no session. A retry with the sameauthSessionand credential stores the session once. Codes that can no longer be used, an unknown session, a missing code, a rate limit,mfa_requiredand a server error are not retryable, and none of them stores a session.register()and everygetToken()attempt resolve the domain with the samestoreOptions.I checked that the tests fail when the code is wrong. Making
register()drop or forcedeliveryMethod, or dropverificationRequired, fails tests. So does makinggetToken()replace theauthSession, dropverification, store a session on a failure, wrap the error, or skip the anonymous session hook. The code samples in the new section compile against the built package, and
tscconfirms the new types and the type derivations used byauth0-tanstack-start-react.Run locally on Node 22.21.1 with
auth0-auth-jsbuilt first:buildandlintpass forauth0-server-js, and 643 of its 647 tests pass. The 4 that fail are the "forwards an already-aborted per-request signal" tests for passkey (3) and database sign-up (1). They also fail on a clean checkout ofmainin my environment, so this change does not cause them.Checklist
