Summary

  • actions/checkout@v3 runs on the Node 16 runtime. GitHub retired Node 16 for Actions a while ago, forced Node 24 as the default runtime on June 2, 2026, and removed Node 20 from runners entirely on September 16, 2026. Any workflow step still pinned to a Node16-based action major version (like checkout@v3) now fails to execute on ubuntu-latest runners.
  • Bumped the single actions/checkout step in .github/workflows/ci.yml from v3 to v5, which runs on the Node 24 runtime and is unaffected by the removal.

Test plan

  • Reproduced the CI build steps locally on Ubuntu 24.04 (matching ubuntu-latest): installed libboost-all-dev/librabbitmq-dev, configured with both gcc/g++ and clang/clang++, built successfully, and ran ctest (no tests defined, exits 0).
  • Confirm the ci workflow run succeeds on GitHub Actions for this PR (checkout step no longer fails on the retired runtime).

actions/checkout@v3 runs on the Node 16 runtime, which GitHub has
retired. GitHub Actions runners removed Node 20 support on
2026-09-16 and now default to Node 24, so any action still pinned to
a Node16-based major version fails to run. actions/checkout@v5 uses
the Node 24 runtime and is unaffected.
