Reject invalid input in fingerprint decoding instead of shifting past 32 bits - #170
Conversation
… 32 bits A hash whose distances add up past bit 32 was decoded by shifting 1 by 32 or more, which is undefined behaviour; it is now an invalid fingerprint. The shift is done on an unsigned value too. A hash count of 0 now decodes to an empty fingerprint whatever follows the header, like trailing data after any other fingerprint. Before, a body with no terminators in it was decoded as hashes nothing would be stored in, and a body with one failed. The C API functions for encoding and decoding return an error for a negative size, a NULL buffer with a nonzero size and, when encoding, more items than the 24-bit size in the header can hold, which was silently truncated.

WalkthroughThe API now checks fingerprint pointers and sizes before encoding or decoding. Decompression rejects bit positions above 32, handles zero-item fingerprints without parsing trailing data, and has expanded boundary and malformed-input tests. ChangesFingerprint validation

Avoid null-pointer arithmetic for an empty fingerprint.
When fp == NULL, size == 0, and the output pointers are valid, the guard allows the call. The next statement evaluates fp + size, which performs pointer arithmetic on a null pointer before CompressFingerprint receives the empty vector. This is undefined behavior.
Construct the vector only when size > 0.

Hardening of fingerprint decoding for untrusted input, on top of #163.
Bit positions past 32. The decompressor never checked that the distances in a hash add up to at most 32, so invalid input made it shift
1by 32 or more, which is undefined behaviour (UBSan:shift exponent 35 is too large for 32-bit type 'int'). It now rejects such input, and shifts an unsigned value.Hash count of 0. Now decodes to an empty fingerprint whatever follows the header, the same way trailing data after any other fingerprint is ignored. Before, the result depended on the trailing bytes: with no zero values in them they were decoded as hashes with nowhere to go, with one the decoding failed.
AQAAAAstill decodes to an empty fingerprint, asTestDecodeFingerprintEmptyexpects.C API arguments.
chromaprint_encode_fingerprint,chromaprint_decode_fingerprintandchromaprint_decode_fingerprint_headerreturn an error for a negative size or a NULL buffer with a nonzero size, instead of passing them on tostd::vector/std::string. Encoding more than 0xFFFFFF items is an error too; the size in the header is 24 bits and was silently truncated.Valid input decodes as before.
Tests: valid bit 32, positions past 32 in the first and second hash, with and without an exception, an empty fingerprint with trailing data, every truncation and single-bit flip of a real fingerprint, and the API argument checks. 109 tests pass in a debug build under ASan and UBSan with no reports. On the current code, 8 of the new tests fail, one by aborting in libstdc++'s debug range check, and UBSan reports the shift above.
