Overview

Extend Fabric.check() with runtime health checks and implement Pi support. Callers can inspect one exact runtime while an invocation continues.

Details

  • live checks native session liveness; busy sessions can pass.
  • active also checks completed extension binding and an available request interface.
  • ready also checks the configured model, required tool registration, and observed Model Context Protocol connection state.
  • Uses an authenticated health channel independent of invocation dispatch. OpenShell SDK requests map to targeted fabric-agent-ctl check commands.
  • Checks send no prompts and make no model-provider requests.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with PiAdapterRuntime.check() and PiSdkSessionHandle.check() in the Pi adapter, then crates/fabric-core/src/check.rs and tests/e2e/test_checks.py.

Summary by CodeRabbit

New Features

  • Added runtime health checks for local Pi runtimes at live, active, and ready levels.
  • Added targeted OpenShell runtime checks with CLI support for selecting health levels.
  • Health checks run during active invocations without additional model prompts.
  • Added authenticated local communication, bounded timeouts, and clear outcomes for unavailable, unsupported, failed, and timed-out checks.
  • Health results cover session state, model configuration, registered tools, and MCP connectivity.
  • Checks invalidate safely when runtimes stop, release, or change ownership.

Documentation

  • Updated SDK, adapter, CLI, and API documentation with runtime health-check behavior and supported scopes.

Walkthrough

Fabric now supports bounded health checks for local Pi runtimes and targeted OpenShell runtimes. The changes add authenticated adapter communication, runtime evidence, lifecycle invalidation, and runtime-server request and report handling.

Changes

Runtime health checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Authenticated adapter health channel
adapters/typescript/common/*, .github/workflows/ci_python.yml
The shared TypeScript adapter adds authenticated loopback health serving, lifecycle cleanup, package validation, tests, documentation, dependencies, and CI builds.
Pi session health evidence
adapters/typescript/pi/*, tests/adapters/*
The Pi adapter reports live, active, and ready health from session, model, tool, and MCP state. Lifecycle changes invalidate in-flight observations.
Fabric health routing and OpenShell checks
crates/fabric-core/*, environment-providers/openshell/*
Fabric registers local runtime capabilities, probes authenticated adapter endpoints, routes OpenShell checks to targeted commands, and invalidates observations when bindings change.
Targeted runtime-server checks
sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime_server/*, tests/python/runtime_server/*
The runtime server accepts agent and runtime identifiers with supported health levels. It applies shared deadlines, validates scoped reports, and returns runtime-specific outcomes.
Health contracts and integration coverage
tests/python/test_checks.py, tests/e2e/test_checks.py, docs/*, README.md
SDK, end-to-end, OpenShell, and documentation changes cover request validation, timeouts, privacy, routing, unsupported scopes, and observation invalidation.

A runtime may fail to restart after an abrupt adapter termination until its stale health endpoint file is removed. This is a bounded operational risk with a manual workaround.

“Local Pi runtimes” to after the complete telemetry paragraph, reconnecting the

- Line 292: Wrap the serveHealth invocation in the lifecycle serve flow with a
new callAdapterHealth helper, located alongside callAdapter, that converts any
failure into LifecycleError with code lifecycle_health_unavailable and the
specified health-channel message; preserve successful results and ensure the

Review comments at @adapters/typescript/pi/README.md:
- Line 288: Update the prose in the active-state table entry to use the product
name “NeMo Fabric” instead of standalone “Fabric,” preserving the existing
meaning and wording otherwise.

Review comments at @crates/fabric-core/src/check.rs:
- Around line 705-708: Update the check_environment rustdoc to describe server
and runtime health checks, including local runtime adapter probing, OpenShell
sandbox checks for server and runtime requests, and unsupported results for
local server scope and other providers; retain the timeout and ownership-change
behavior. Regenerate the committed API documentation using the project’s docs
generation workflow so the corresponding check_environment pages match the
source documentation.
- Around line 535-541: Merge each collapsible nested if in the affected check
logic: combine the observed_at presence and RFC3339 validation conditions, the
CheckRequest::Runtime pattern and remote_check_agent comparison, and the
bindings match with binding removal. Preserve the existing condition ordering
and bodies, including the early return and state updates.

27-28: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The comparison is order-insensitive. It checks membership with Set.has() and Array.includes(), so the position of dist/health.d.ts and dist/health.js cannot make pack:check fail. No reorder is needed.

.github/workflows/ci_python.yml: 2

110-115: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The dependency-installation concern is refuted. install-typescript-pi invokes install-typescript-contract first, and that recipe runs npm ci in the contract directory. The adapter command includes the workspace root, which contains the file:../../adapter-contract/typescript dependency.

103-108: 🔒 Security & Privacy

Do not remove the npm cache for this workflow.

The changed cache steps only build the Pi adapter and run tests. The build-wheels job uploads Python wheels and does not restore the npm cache, so no cache-poisoning path to the uploaded artifact is established.

adapters/typescript/common/src/health.ts: 1

132-136: 🩺 Stability & Availability

The collision premise does not hold for Fabric's local runtime path. start_local_runtime generates a new runtime ID, and new_id combines a timestamp, process ID, and per-process counter. Fabric then assigns each runtime its own FABRIC_HOME directory. A stale directory from a crashed host is not reused by the next local runtime. Normal cleanup also removes the directory and endpoint.

The wx flag protects against an unexpected pre-existing file; no change is required for the inspected path.

170-172: 🩺 Stability & Availability

The claimed availability regression is not reachable through the bound transport. transport.serve.handle does not cancel RuntimeServer.handle when a client disconnects or its deadline expires. During shutdown, self.shutting_down remains true, so later invokes fail with host_stopping before the runtime-state check. The reported runtime_unavailable consequence is therefore not established.

from a stale health.endpoint.json left by an abrupt restart: remove or
atomically replace only an existing endpoint owned by this health server, while

Identical records with the same ID are deduplicated and retain every source as
provenance. Different records with the same ID fail as ambiguous; discovery
does not merge fields or choose an override. Workflow entry points and settings

Learning: In this repo, files generated under `docs/reference/api/**` are NVIDIA NeMo Fabric API reference output. When reviewing changes to these generated pages, do not treat sidebar `position`/ordering updates as direct manual edits—these can be regenerated by running `just docs` after adding public types. Only flag substantive content changes that are not explained by generation.

Applied to files:

  • docs/reference/api/rust-library-reference/nemo-fabric-core/index.mdx
  • docs/reference/api/rust-library-reference/nemo-fabric-core/check/fn-check-environment.mdx

Approved as part of the health-check stack review, subject to the fix requested in #466 before merging the stack.

Tested the stack tip on macOS and Linux: 295 Rust tests, focused Python health suites (397 macOS / 328 Linux), and TypeScript unit, dependency, and package-install checks.
Also verified real Pi busy/timeout recovery, native OpenClaw 2026.9.4 service/runtime health, and real OpenShell server health with both sandbox ownership modes.

The Python health checks start the TypeScript Pi host from a clean checkout. Build the contract, common host, and Pi adapter in the Python matrix and Relay 0.9 compatibility job before pytest.
