Overview

Adds optional harness.settings.max_buffer_size to the Claude adapter.

Problem The Claude Agent SDK caps each JSON message from Claude Code at 1 MiB. A larger one, such as a big tool result, fails the invocation.
Change Pass the setting to ClaudeAgentOptions.max_buffer_size
When omitted SDK default; behavior unchanged
Our case An evaluation run hit the cap; we now run with 32 MiB

Details

Area Change
Descriptor Optional integer ≥ 1, mirrored in the CLI, Harbor example and catalog copies
Adapter One-line passthrough with no re-check, since planning and runtime start already validate (as for Hermes max_tokens)
Docs Adapter README and Claude integration page. They name no error code: the SDK re-raises an oversized message as a plain Exception.
Tests Descriptor, passthrough and omission tests; planning rejects 1.5, 0 and true

Validation

Check Result
pytest: Claude adapter, settings, catalog, discovery, Harbor 166 passed
Full pytest 2158 passed, 109 skipped. 8 mini-SWE-agent Relay tests fail only locally, because of an ambient ~/.config/nemo-relay/plugins.toml
cargo test -p nemo-fabric-cli (descriptor drift), catalog --check, ruff 0.15.21, headers, git diff --check Pass
Mutations: passthrough dropped, Fabric default added, schema loosened or removed All caught
Not run just docs, TypeScript (no TypeScript change)

Where should the reviewer start?

  1. max_buffer_size in adapters/python/claude/claude.fabric-adapter.json
  2. Its passthrough in build_options

Related Issues: (use one of the action keywords Closes / Fixes / Resolves / Relates to)

  • Closes [Enhancement]: Claude adapter: expose the SDK's max_buffer_size #413

    • The descriptor validates the value instead of the adapter, unlike the issue's proposal, so an invalid value fails at planning.
    • The issue's SDK version pin is not included.
  • I confirm this contribution is my own work, or I have the right to submit it under this project's license.

  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

The Claude Agent SDK reads each JSON message from Claude Code into a
buffer capped at 1 MiB unless ClaudeAgentOptions.max_buffer_size raises
it. A larger message, such as a big tool result, fails the invocation,
and the Claude adapter offered no way to raise the cap.

The Claude descriptor now declares an optional integer max_buffer_size,
which planning and runtime start validate like the other Claude settings,
and the adapter passes it to ClaudeAgentOptions. Omitting it keeps the
SDK default. The SDK raises the same CLIJSONDecodeError for an oversized
message as for invalid JSON, so the claude_invalid_json diagnostic now
names the setting.

Walkthrough

The Claude adapter adds an optional harness.settings.max_buffer_size setting. It passes the configured value to ClaudeAgentOptions. Schemas, documentation, catalog data, and tests describe and validate the setting.

Explanation

Issue #413 remains only active direct target. The PR implements the optional schema field, minimum 1 validation, omission behavior, ClaudeAgentOptions.max_buffer_size passthrough, catalog copies, documentation, and tests for descriptor, omission, passthrough, and invalid values. The head still pins claude-agent-sdk==0.2.120 in adapters/python/claude/pyproject.toml, so it does not implement the issue request for a version that bundles Claude Code 2.1.280 or newer. The changed tests also do not establish staging-order coverage or oversized-record behavior without truncation.

Resolution

Pin claude-agent-sdk to a qualified version that bundles Claude Code 2.1.280 or newer. Add or provide automated tests that verify validation occurs before plugin and MCP staging and that an oversized record fails without truncation or a payload-bearing diagnostic.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

Naming max_buffer_size in the claude_invalid_json message helped only if
the adapter could tell an oversized message from invalid JSON, and only
the SDK's message text or the type of its original_error distinguishes
them. During a run, the SDK also reports the oversized message as a plain
Exception that never reaches sdk_failure.

Signed-off-by: Fernando Luo <fernandol@nvidia.com>
The SDK's message reader turns the oversized-message error into a plain
Exception, so the invocation fails without claude_invalid_json. Describe
only the limit and that a larger message fails without truncation, and
leave the default to the SDK instead of stating its current value.

The catalog fingerprint matches the canonical Claude descriptor. No stale-bundle defect remains at this line, and the comment is only a generic validation reminder.

The Claude Agent SDK applies the limit to decoded message length, not
UTF-8 bytes, so the descriptor and docs now describe it as the SDK's size
limit instead of a byte count.

Add coverage for oversized Claude messages.

The changed test only maps max_buffer_size through build_options. The omission and schema-validation tests cover configuration, not an oversized message reaching the Claude adapter. Add a focused test that asserts an oversized record fails without truncation.
