Water filtration
The potential use of rubber granulates has been extensively studied by Dr. Yuefeng Xie. He has developed a method that uses rubber granulates to filter wastewater. Several studies conducted by Xie show that the this filter is much more cost effective than conventional sand or anthracite filters. Because of substantially higher water filtration rates and lighter weight in comparison to sand or anthracite, these filters may also be used in a mobile treatment unit for disaster relief operations. Here are the published studies:
- Crumb rubber filtration: A potential technology for ballast water treatment (Tang et al., Marine Environmental Research, 2006)
- The Effects of Various Factors on Ballast Water Treatment Using Crumb Rubber Filtration: Statistic Analysis Crumb rubber filtration: A potential technology for ballast water treatment (Tang et al., Environmental Engineering Science, 2006)
- Filter media: Crumb rubber for wastewater filtration (Y. Xie, Filtration & Separation, 2007)
- Enhanced performance of crumb rubber filtration for ballast water treatment (Tang et al., Chemosphere, 2009)
- Prediction of Clean-Bed Head Loss in Crumb Rubber Filters (Tang et al., Journal of Environmental Engineering, 2011)
The use of shreds as a biofilter also show potential, according to a study of Finnish Tyre Recycling.
