An HTTP/2 server engine on nghttp2, behind use_http2, serving the same router, middleware and handlers as HTTP/1.x. Stacked on #264 (server ALPN) and #269 (the Sink seam); the last commit is the engine itself.

How a connection reaches it

  • TLS listener: tls.alpn_protocols = &.{ "h2", "http/1.1" }; when the client picks "h2", handleConnection hands the connection to h2.Engine(Ctx).serve after the handshake.
  • Cleartext: Listener.http2_prior_knowledge = true; on the first request, handleRequests sniffs the 24-byte preface (reading only while what is buffered is still a prefix of it) and hands over, else serves HTTP/1.x as before. No Upgrade: h2c.
  • listen() refuses alpn_protocols containing "h2" in a build without use_http2.

Engine (src/server/h2.zig), the shape of the h2-engine sketch (#137):

  • A reader task (the connection's) feeding nghttp2_session_mem_recv2, a writer task copying mem_send2 output out under the mutex and writing it outside, and one task per stream. One std.Io.Mutex serializes nghttp2 calls and is never held across I/O. Over TLS this needs the TLS module to allow one concurrent reader plus one writer, which tls.zig does.
  • Per stream: a Request with body_source (a queue sized to the stream window, allocated on the first DATA frame; window credit returned as the handler reads, no_auto_window_update) and a Response.initSink whose sink submits the head with the first body bytes, a flush (streaming) or the end, so a response without a body is one HEADERS frame. Body bytes go through a bounded queue to a data provider that defers when empty (NGHTTP2_ERR_DEFERRED / resume_data) and sends trailers at the end (EOF|NO_END_STREAM + nghttp2_submit_trailer, the pattern from grpc-lite's server, MIT).
  • A request body the handler leaves unread: after the frame that ends the response is sent, RST_STREAM(NO_ERROR) (RFC 9113 §8.1). Sent from on_frame_send because nghttp2 sends RST_STREAM ahead of queued response frames.
  • When the session wants neither to read nor to write (after a GOAWAY), the writer shuts the connection down, which ends the reader (RFC 9113 §5.4.1).
  • Each open stream counts in busy, so the drain waits for in-flight streams; a draining server refuses new streams with REFUSED_STREAM and one GOAWAY. Request timeout per stream task (Request.setTimeout works), keepalive timeout while the connection has no open stream.
  • ServerConfig.http2: max concurrent streams, stream and connection windows, max header list size (checked in on_header), and the stream-reset rate limit and CONTINUATION cap passed to nghttp2 explicitly.

Tests (src/server/h2_test.zig, with a minimal nghttp2 client): GET/HEAD/404 over h2c; 32 streams multiplexed; a 1 MiB body echoed through a streaming handler (past both windows); trailers; an unread 300 KiB body answered, then RST_STREAM(NO_ERROR); HTTP/1.1 on a prior-knowledge listener; HTTP/2 over TLS through ALPN with tls.zig. zig build test -Duse_http2=true passes on 0.16 and 0.17, and ./check.sh without HTTP/2 is unchanged.

h2spec 2.6.0: 138/146 over h2c and over TLS (with BoringSSL in my fork). The 8 failures are nghttp2 1.70's own policy, not the glue: it drops PRIORITY frames entirely (RFC 9113 deprecated the scheme), so the two PRIORITY checks fail; and it no longer keeps closed-stream state, so frames on closed streams (5.1 #8, #9, #11, #12) and a lower stream ID (5.1.1 #2) are ignored instead of answered with STREAM_CLOSED/PROTOCOL_ERROR, and a stream window overflow (6.9.1 #3) is a connection error rather than a stream error.

Happy to split or reshape this to fit how you want to land HTTP/2.

tls.zig's server already negotiates ALPN, but the listener never passed
it a list, so a TLS listener could not advertise h2 or anything else.
ServerConfig.Tls gains alpn_protocols (server preference order), passed
to tls.server, and the server Connection gains negotiatedProtocol() for
whatever routes on the result (an HTTP/2 engine, for one).
Response writes HTTP/1.x straight to the connection, which leaves an
HTTP/2 engine no way to reuse the router, middleware and handlers.

- Sink (src/sink.zig): head, interim (100 Continue), body writer, end
  with trailers, writeError, peerGone.
- Response.initSink: a response whose head, body bytes and end go to a
  sink; Response.trailer for trailer fields; Response.peerGone. The
  HTTP/1.x paths are unchanged.
- Request.body_source: a body that arrives unframed (HTTP/2 DATA),
  decoded like any other; Request.applyEntityHeaders, factored out of
  the parser.
- Server.dispatch: routes a request through the middleware to its
  handler, for an engine with its own request loop.
With use_http2, a TLS listener serves HTTP/2 when ALPN picks "h2", and
a listener with http2_prior_knowledge serves cleartext HTTP/2 to a
client that opens with the preface (HTTP/1.x to the rest).

src/server/h2.zig runs a connection as a reader task feeding the nghttp2
session, a writer task sending its output, and a task per stream that
builds a Request (body_source) and a sink-backed Response and calls
Server.dispatch, so streams reach the same router, middleware and
handlers. One mutex serializes nghttp2 calls and is never held across
I/O. Bodies stream with flow control both ways; responses carry
trailers; an unread request body ends the stream with RST_STREAM
(NO_ERROR) once the response is out; a finished session closes the
connection; a draining server refuses new streams with GOAWAY. Limits
(streams, windows, header list size, reset rate, CONTINUATIONs) are in
ServerConfig.http2.

The shape follows the h2-engine sketch (lalinsky#137); the deferred data
provider and trailers follow grpc-lite's server (MIT).

📝 Walkthrough

The server adds an nghttp2-based HTTP/2 engine with TLS ALPN and cleartext prior-knowledge routing. Protocol-neutral request body sources and response sinks connect the engine to shared request dispatch. Configuration, documentation, and tests cover HTTP/2 settings, streaming, trailers, and connection negotiation.

Changes: HTTP server protocols

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol-neutral request and response I/O
src/sink.zig, src/request.zig, src/parser.zig, src/response.zig, src/middleware.zig, src/server.zig, src/root.zig, src/server_test.zig, CHANGELOG.md
Requests can read unframed body sources, and responses can use sinks for headers, body data, and trailers. Server dispatch and peer-disconnect checks use the shared interfaces. Tests cover sink responses, body sources, and dispatch.
HTTP/2 configuration and connection routing
src/config.zig, src/server.zig, src/client_test.zig, src/root.zig, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Configuration adds HTTP/2 settings, TLS ALPN protocols, and cleartext prior-knowledge selection. The server routes connections based on negotiated ALPN or the HTTP/2 preface.
HTTP/2 engine, tests, and usage notes
src/server/h2.zig, src/server/h2_test.zig, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
The nghttp2 engine handles HTTP/2 streams, flow-controlled bodies, trailers, draining, and stream cleanup. Tests cover cleartext and TLS operation, multiplexing, and body handling. Documentation describes setup and nghttp2 bindings.

The new HTTP/2 server can leave connections stuck when clients disconnect mid-request. Clients can also grow memory on one connection with oversized or reset header blocks. Unread request bodies can stall later uploads on the same connection, and configured timeouts are not enforced on some backends. These availability issues should be fixed before merge. The changelog also describes an HTTP/1.0 behavior that is not implemented.

- An HTTP/1.0 request that asks to keep the connection now gets
`Connection: keep-alive` on its response when the server keeps it. Without
it an HTTP/1.0 client (ApacheBench with `-k`, for one) waits for the server
to close, while the server waits for the next request.

Correct or remove the HTTP/1.0 keep-alive changelog entry.

Response.sendHeader writes Connection: close only when keepalive is false. It does not write Connection: keep-alive, so this PR does not implement the behavior documented in CHANGELOG.md. Add the header for persistent HTTP/1.0 responses, or move the entry to the PR that implements it.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

group.await can hang forever when the peer disconnects while a handler waits on the stream.

Trigger: the client closes the TCP connection while a handler is in req.body(). readerLoop returns on EndOfStream, and closing is set. The writer then exits because it has nothing to send. The stream task is still blocked, and nothing wakes it:

  • If it is in BodyReader.streamFn, it waits in queue.get or futexWait. No DATA, END_STREAM or reset arrives, because the reader is gone.
  • If it is in StreamSink.put with a full out queue, the writer that would drain the queue has exited.

Body and out queues are only closed by onStreamClose, or by the cleanup defer that runs after group.await. Neither happens here. The connection task blocks in group.await. It keeps the connection slot and pooled buffers. The stream's busy count also stays up, so a graceful shutdown waits out its whole budget. On a backend without a working per-stream deadline (see the Timer comment), only server cancellation ends this.

The same hang happens when a client half-closes its write side after sending requests. The writer exits and responses never go out.

Fix: before group.await, while holding the lock, reset every stream and close both queues. Then kick the writer.

Propagate deadlines into the HTTP/2 engine.

On non-zio backends, both HTTP/2 timers use Timer.init(null). Timer.set then does nothing because no Watch is attached. This disables timeout.keepalive in readerLoop and timeout.request in serveStream. An idle connection can retain its buffers without the configured keepalive bound, and a stalled handler or body read can ignore the request timeout.

Keep the connection timer alive when handing control to Engine.serve, pass it to readerLoop, and preserve its cleanup. Do not share that timer between concurrent streams. Add independent per-stream deadline handling, or document that timeout.request is unsupported on non-zio backends.

Return dropped request DATA to the connection window.

With NGHTTP2_OPTMASK_NO_AUTO_WINDOW_UPDATE, onDataChunk returns without consuming DATA when stream.body_done is set or putUncancelable returns error.Closed. onStreamClose then closes the queue without consuming its unread bytes. nghttp2_session_close_stream does not return those bytes to the connection window.

The nghttp2 ignored-DATA path does consume DATA, but these callback returns occur before that path. Repeated unread request bodies can therefore exhaust the connection-level receive window and stall later request bodies.

Call nghttp2_session_consume_connection(session, len) for every dropped chunk. Before onStreamClose releases the stream, call it for the unread bytes remaining in stream.body. Propagate a nonzero result as a callback failure.

Update onDataChunk to return len bytes to the connection window with
nghttp2_session_consume_connection when body_done is set or putUncancelable
returns error.Closed, and return a callback failure if consumption fails. In
onStreamClose, consume any unread bytes remaining in stream.body before closing
the queue, also propagating a nonzero result as a callback failure.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Streams that never got a handler are never freed while the connection stays open.

release frees a stream only when both handler_done and protocol_done are set. handler_done is set only by runStream, by a failed startStream, or by the serve cleanup when the connection ends. A stream that closes before startStream ever runs keeps handler_done == false. Examples:

  • Its header list exceeded max_header_list_size, so onHeader returned NGHTTP2_ERR_TEMPORAL_CALLBACK_FAILURE.
  • The client reset it during HEADERS/CONTINUATION.
  • Allocation failed in onHeader.

onStreamClose sets protocol_done, but the arena stays allocated and the entry stays in conn.streams.

Consequence: a client on one long-lived connection can keep sending oversized header blocks. Each one leaves behind an arena holding up to max_header_list_size of copied headers. These streams are not counted in open_streams, so the keepalive deadline never clears them while traffic continues. The rapid-reset limit counts only client RST_STREAM frames, not resets the server sends. Memory grows without bound until the connection closes.

Proposed fix
             if (error_code != c.NGHTTP2_NO_ERROR or !stream.ended) stream.reset = true;
             stream.closeBody();
             if (stream.out) |*q| q.close(conn.io);
+ // No handler task was ever started, so nobody else will release it.
+            if (!stream.counted) stream.handler_done = true;
             stream.release(.protocol);

Review comment at @src/server/h2.zig around lines 999 - 1008:
Update onStreamClose so streams that were never counted and have no handler task
are marked handler_done before stream.release(.protocol). Preserve the existing
release behavior for streams whose handler was started.
