A crash during initial setup is very often related to how the Google Maps API key is configured or retrieved by the app. If the API key is missing, invalid, or the Maps SDK for Android is not enabled in your Google Cloud Console, the underlying Google Maps SDK will throw a rendering or security exception and crash the app.

To help you verify if your API key setup is working correctly, we highly recommend using the Secrets Gradle Plugin. This prevents you from hardcoding your API key in your version control system.

Here is a step-by-step checklist to resolve this and get your map running smoothly:

Step 1: Securely Configure Your API Key

1. Add the Secrets Gradle Plugin to your project-level build.gradle.kts:

Step 3: Google Cloud Console Checklist

1. Go to the Google Cloud Console and select your project.
2. Ensure that the Maps SDK for Android is explicitly Enabled for this project.
3. If you have API key restrictions configured (e.g., package name or SHA-1 fingerprint restrictions), ensure they match your debug build's package name and signing certificate exactly.
