Browser extension: Configurable random suffix length for custom domain aliases
Feature request
I'm aware that Addy.io already adds a random suffix to custom aliases when using Addy's shared domains. For example, an alias can take the form:
amazon.x7k2p@addy.iowhere the five random characters provide additional uniqueness and make the address difficult to guess.
However, when using my own custom domain/subdomain, this behaviour does not appear to be available in the same way.
The browser extension does provide:
Automatically Fill New Alias Local Parts When Using The Custom Alias Format → Domain with random extension
which produces an address such as:
amazon.5r3@subdomain.example.comThis is almost exactly the functionality I'm looking for, but the random extension appears to be fixed at three characters, with no option to change its length.
I'd like to request the ability to configure the number of random characters used by this option.
For example:
Random extension length:
3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 8 / 10Selecting five characters would then allow the browser extension to automatically generate:
amazon.x7k2p@subdomain.example.comrather than:
amazon.x7k@subdomain.example.comUse case
I'm using my own custom subdomain with Addy.io and creating a unique alias for every service.
I specifically want to retain the combination of:
recognisable-service-name.random-suffix@subdomain.example.comFor example:
amazon.x7k2p@subdomain.example.compaypal.m4q8r@subdomain.example.comThe website-derived portion makes it immediately obvious which service an alias belongs to, while the random portion prevents aliases from being easily guessed if someone knows the custom domain/subdomain and the naming convention being used.
Using a custom domain/subdomain also provides portability: the domain remains under the user's control and could be moved to another mail/alias provider in future without changing all of the addresses already given to services.
The existing Domain with random extension option in the browser extension therefore provides the ideal workflow, but I'd prefer to use the same five-character level of randomness that Addy already uses elsewhere rather than being limited to three characters.
Suggested implementation
Perhaps a setting could be added alongside the existing Domain with random extension option:
Random extension length: 5
Alternatively, this could be a dropdown with several sensible values, for example:
The existing three-character behaviour could remain the default, so this would be backwards-compatible and would not change the behaviour for existing users.
The main request is therefore not to add random suffixes to aliases — that functionality already exists — but to make the length of the random suffix configurable when using the browser extension's "Domain with random extension" custom alias format with a custom domain/subdomain.
